How it works
Calculate sales tax on the pretax bill, then apply your chosen tip percentage to either the pretax or tax-inclusive amount. Divide the total equally among the people paying.
Worked example
Show example inputs and result
Bill before tax: 80 · Sales tax rate: 8 · Tip rate: 20 · People splitting: 2 · Calculate tip on: Pretax bill.
- Each person pays
- $51.20
- Total bill
- $102.40
- Tip
- $16.00
- Sales tax
- $6.40
Settle the total, then split it
Calculate tax and tip once for the full bill before dividing. This avoids accidentally tipping each person on the full amount. Equal splitting assumes everyone agrees to share the entire bill equally.
Check the receipt before adding gratuity
An included gratuity or service charge should be considered before entering an additional tip. This tool does not read your receipt or decide how a service charge is distributed. The percentages below are examples you can replace.
Compare different scenarios
Inputs held constant: Bill before tax: 80 $ · Sales tax rate: 8 % · Tip rate: 20 % · Calculate tip on: Pretax bill.
| People splitting | Each person pays |
|---|---|
| 2 | $51.20 |
| 3 | $34.13 |
| 4 | $25.60 |
Questions and answers
Does the tool decide the correct tip?
No. You choose the percentage and tax basis. Check whether your bill already includes a service charge or gratuity to avoid adding it twice.
Why are some results rounded?
Results display up to 8 decimal places. Calculations use the unrounded values; very small values use scientific notation. JavaScript floating-point arithmetic can introduce tiny rounding differences.
Are my inputs sent to a server?
The calculator processes inputs in your browser. Its code does not send your values to a server.
